Can we outsource the intelligence of autonomous mobile robots into a cloud? We answered this question in the now successfully completed Robot-in-the-Cloud research project. The use of AI enables mobile robots to be more and more autonomous. At the same time, this requires significant on-board computing capacities. In order to take advantage of economies of scale, the project investigated the outsourcing of computationally intensive processes to a cloud. Together with BMW Group, CONGIV GmbH and KS Control GmbH, we developed a concept for this. After testing it in our lab, we put it into real-life operation at BMW. There, autonomous forklifts controlled from the cloud successfully performed side loading and unloading processes on truck trailers, as well as storage and retrieval in/from a block warehouse. The results form the basis for further exciting research projects.
