PreCoM - Predictive Cognitive Maintenance Decision Support System

The Internet of Things not only fundamentally changes the way we manufacture products, but also comes with vast opportunities in the field of maintenance. By applying intelligent algorithms to machine condition data, predictive maintenance enables companies to predict and avoid machine failures and thus significantly increasing OEE.

A machine breakdown is one of the most disruptive events that can occur on the production floor and causes high costs. In order to prevent such breakdowns, the iwb is involved in the EU Horizon 2020 research project “PreCoM”, which investigates the concept of predictive maintenance in conjunction with production planning, in order to increase machine availability.

Motivation

Scheduling maintenance actions shortly before a machine breaks down is the vision of predictive maintenance. It is strongly connected to Industry of Things (IoT) and Big Data, since it empowers the interconnectivity of machines. Predictive maintenance is a huge step forward coming from preventive maintenance strate-gies. The latter schedules fixed intervals for maintenance actions, without regard-ing the actual condition of the equipment. Often, maintenance service is needlessly conducted and leads to high resource commitment and low machine availability.

Objectives

The objective target of the project is the development of a predictive maintenance system that is capable of estimating the remaining useful life of critical machine components. Furthermore, the system also incorporates a module for production planning, which uses predictive maintenance data to optimize production scheduling in order to minimize disruptivity of maintenance actions.
