CubeSats are small low-cost satellites that are increasingly used in scientific and commercial space missions. Due to limited space, it is often difficult to integrate large antennas into satellites. Current boom technology is either too bulky or lacks the required pointing accuracy and stiffness needed for a high-gain antenna system. In this project, we designed the boom for a deployable reflector antenna with a strong focus on the systemic application of design methods. After establishing requirements and functions, several concepts were developed and evaluated. The quantitative design was carried with #solutionspaceanalysis, our specialty at LPL. The result is ahardware prototype of a lightweight extendable boom. Enjoy our demo video!
