Title of the Dissertation:
Evaluation of conventional and alternative drivetrain concepts in the paralympic discipline handcycling
Abstract:
As the handcycle`s drive train has been adopted from conventional cycling it is questionable if this is the best solution for the hand-arm-shoulder system. In a specially built handbike measurement facility three drive concepts (I conventional round, II tilted cranks, III elliptical motion) have been realized. Gross efficiency was the highest in use of the drivetrain I, however the subjective rating showed a preference of drivetrain II. This investigation demonstrates the correlation between anthropometry and gross efficiency, and shows the importance of an individual adaptation of seating position and kinematics of the drivetrain.
