TUM Sustainability Day 2026
What if circularity was not an afterthought, but a design principle guiding every stage of a product’s life? 🤔♻️
At the TUM Sustainability Day, we presented Scrapyard4Future— an interdisciplinary project with TUM AIS - Institute of Automation and Information Systems, TUM Chair of Materials Engineering of Additive Manufacturing, TUM fml – future.meets.logistics., and Lehrstuhl für Ergonomie/ Human Factors TUM exploring how circularity can be systematically integrated into industrial systems.
Our framework maps Circular Economy as a system of decisions: when to maintain, repair, refurbish, repurpose, recycle, recover — and how these decisions feed back into future product design. This is where interdisciplinarity matters: technologies such as AI-supported component recognition, additive manufacturing, and automated disassembly need to be connected with usable decision structures and stakeholder collaboration.
The TUM Sustainability Day provided a valuable setting to bring these ideas into conversation with a broader audience. We discussed how circularity can move from abstract principle to practical decision-making in industrial contexts. We also invited visitors to reflect on their own understanding of Circular Economy, everyday practices, and willingness to act more sustainably through a short interactive survey.
