Cycling for a better tomorrow!

Last week, we held our 10th MCube Speaker Series, focusing on the "Future of Mobility," on the rooftop terrace of Vorhoelzer Forum of the Technical University of Munich. 3 experts in cycling advocacy, traffic safety, and urban logistics came together: Maria Deingruber (ADFC Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club e. V.), Professor Marco Dozza (Professor of Active Safety and Road User Behavior, Chalmers University of Technology), and Peter Bloesl Blösl (founder of B4B Logistics & Sustainability Manager at Hermes Germany GmbH). We were thrilled to see a diverse audience join us to discuss the vast potential of bicycles and their limitations.

Moderated by Nicolas Niessen, the discussion revolved around the potential of cycling as a sustainable urban mobility solution, promoting greener and more efficient transportation systems while prioritizing safe, accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable cycling experiences for all.

The key takeaways:
Reassignment of space: Professor Marco Dozza highlighted the importance of reallocating space in favour of the bicycle to encourage a sustainable mobility transition. Similar to the historical shift from horse carriages to cars, we must provide the appropriate infrastructure to accommodate the mobility needs of the future.

Enhancing personal safety: While cycling holds incredible potential to revolutionize urban mobility, we must address concerns regarding personal safety more effectively. This involves implementing wider and separated bicycle lanes, intelligent traffic flow management systems, and increased bicycle parking options, among other measures.

Urban freight transport: Our discussion also delved into the role of bicycles in sustainable urban freight transport. B4B Logistics has already implemented innovative solutions such as micro-depots and consolidated deliveries using cargo bikes in Munich.

Societal and political considerations: We received questions from the audience about the political, administrative, and societal roles within the mobility transition in Munich and urban areas at large. The discussion touched on topics such as personal safety on bicycles, the potential of micro-mobility, and accident statistics involving vehicles and cyclists.

The future of urban mobility: It became evident that bicycles serve as a compelling alternative to cars for both personal and freight transportation in urban areas. They will play a vital role in driving the sustainable mobility transition in the near future.

Thank you for joining us and a big thank you to our speakers!
