Eye movement measurement for insight into cognitive processes: Workshop on Eye-Tracking - Technologies, Standards and Methods to Improve Data Quality

From March 22-23, 2023, the fifth qualification workshop within the GfA-Next initiative of Gesellschaft für Arbeitswissenschaft (GfA) on eye-tracking took place at the Lehrstuhl für Ergonomie/ Human Factors TUM of the Technische Universität München. A total of 15 young scientists with a background in ergonomics or occupational science from different institutes all over Germany participated.

Klaus Bengler, head of the Chair of Ergonomics, gave an introduction to the theoretical basics on the first day. Information processing processes and the construct of attention were discussed, the functional principle and the intentions and goals of eye tracking were explained, and various gaze measurement methods and systems were presented. In addition, important terms, definitions and metrics were discussed in relation to international standardizations using examples. Furthermore, recommendations for the practical use of eye-trackers in planning and conducting studies were described in order to avoid typical errors. The goal is reliable and valid data. Finally, fields of application, exemplary studies and visualization possibilities were pointed out. The first day was complemented with a first practical introduction to the head-mounted system "Dikablis" and the remote system "SmartEye", led by the two research associates Niklas Grabbe and Bianca Biebl. In the evening, the workshop was followed by a cozy get-together in a Munich pub, which invited for networking.

On the second day, the workshop participants actively applied the knowledge they had previously acquired in two small experiments in a static driving simulator and a dynamic seat box. On the one hand, the focus was on visual gaze strategies at road intersections in traffic with the difference between free vision and peripheral visual field loss as well as driver distraction during secondary activities (e.g. operation of navigation or calls) during manual driving with the difference between tablet and smartphone operation. Finally, everyone discussed the results and exchanged their respective experiences regarding both systems.

The workshop met with great interest and was a benefit for all participants.
