Biography

Dipl.-Ing. Jonas Schmidtler is a research associate under Professor Dr. phil. Klaus Bengler at the Institute of Ergonomics at the Technical University Munich since September 2013. He earned his diploma (German equivalent to a master’s degree) in mechanical engineering and management at the Technical University Munich. His thesis at MAN Truck & Bus dealt with the design, construction, and experimental evaluation of an alternative truck interior concept. At the Chair of Ergonomics Mr. Schmidtler is a part of the project KobotAERGO (adaptive collaborative robots as an age-matching companion for an ergonomic and flexible material handling) funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). This approach studies collaborative robots or cobots as a part of Intelligent Assist Devices (IADs) and represents a class of handling systems that combine the characteristics of industrial robots and handheld manipulators. The goal of the new solutions is to close the gap between the stated limits and combine the respective advantages of each other: easy operation and low cost of the manipulators on the one hand and the precision, programmability and path guidance of an industrial robot on the other. The overall goal is to enable a flexible optimal adjustment of the cobot to the physical abilities and needs of each individual in the field of sensomotoric and cognitive skills. In the context of a simple and natural, intuitive, and interactive process-oriented operation the Institute of Ergonomics will develop a comprehensive interaction of cobot and human regardless of age, gender, and skill level.
