Current results of the "VerStaRad" research project

In our research project "VerStaRad," we are investigating a calculation method for quantifying abrasion in the design of the wheel-rail system of storage and retrieval machines. There are currently no standards or regulations for the design of the wheel-rail system of storage and retrieval machines. Due to the high degree of automation and the high handling rates in logistics, the load on the wheel-rail system of storage and retrieval machines is very high. This results in high dynamic forces and, therefore, high wear, which can lead to the stacker crane coming to a standstill. The aim is to predict wheel-rail contact systems' wear behavior using AI models to replace time-consuming and complex modeling and simulation processes.
So far in the project, we have investigated the influencing variables and the target variable with regard to the abrasion. In addition, different contact models and wear models in the wheel-rail contact system were numerically analyzed and compared. The damage case in the wheel-rail system of storage and retrieval machines, namely sliding wear, was added to the SRM design. This further increases safety when dimensioning the wheel-rail system.
