Occlusion

The Occlusion Method is an ISO standardized task (ISO 16673) that can be used to measure visual demand and resumability of a task. In an occlusion experiment, participants wear a special pair of glasses that intermittently obscure or occlude a participant’s view while performing a task under investigation. Through this, a participant’s visual access to the surrounding environment is controlled through a series of occluded and unoccluded instances. The purpose of this is to simulate views to and away from the area where a task under investigation is being performed, the likes of which would be had when a participant performed both the driving task and task under investigation concurrently. Evaluations using this method are based on total shutter open time, total task time (unoccluded) and total task time (occluded).
