Gear Research Center (FZG)
The Gear Research Center (FZG) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Stahl. In teaching as well as in research there is a close contact to industry, in order to be able to offer modern education as close as possible to practical demands, and to direct the research arreas towards practical problems.
Equipment
To carry out its various research activities, the FZG has extensive equipment for testing and examining transmission components. The chair employs over 70 staff, around two-thirds of whom are research assistants and one-third technical and administrative staff working in areas such as the workshop, test facility, electrical/electronics laboratory, measurement/materials laboratory, and secretarial office. In addition, there are research assistants and student assistants, as well as regular visiting scientists from abroad.
In total, the FZG has more than 90 test benches. The workshop area is equipped with all the necessary machine tools and work equipment to manufacture and maintain the required test benches and measuring equipment. A state-of-the-art gear grinding machine is available for gear finishing. The chair also has an electrical/electronics workshop where the necessary control and measurement technology for test bench control is developed, built, and maintained.
A detailed description of the test benches, workshop, and laboratories is provided in the “Equipment” section.
Funding
The research projects are financed by publicly funded and private third-party funds. The Research Association for Drive Technology (FVA) plays an important role in this, mostly through industrial joint research (IGF). Other important research partners include the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Bavarian Research Foundation, the German Scientific Society for Sustainable Energy Sources, Mobility and Carbon Cycles (DGMK), the Research Association for Internal Combustion Engines (FVV), and research on steel. However, cooperation with individual research and industry partners is also very important to the chair in order to enable the practical implementation of the principles developed. Experimental and theoretical investigations can be carried out in the above-mentioned research areas.
