Research at the FZG
At FZG, there is a close relationship between research and education with the industry.
One of the Institutes main areas of work is systematic research into the load-carrying capacity of gear transmissions. Applications in automotive engineering, such as synchronizers, multi-disc clutches, and roller bearings, have developed as further focal points. Research activities at the FZG focus on the service life, efficiency, friction, and vibration behavior of gears and gear elements. An overview of the central topics of the FZG in the area of research, teaching, and service is given in the figure below.
In research and teaching, there is close contact with industry to make training modern and practical and orient research to the current challenges of practical application. Conversely, the latest scientific findings and methods are made available to industry. A prominent result of the close cooperation with companies in the vehicle and transmission construction as well as the lubricant industry is the development of gear tests for the testing of transmission oils, e.g., using the FZG test according to DIN ISO 14635, which is also recognized in Europe (CEC) and the USA (ASTM). Furthermore, the institute is intensively involved in national and international standardization activities and joint work of, e.g., VDI, DIN, and ISO.
