The FZG hypoid test rig was developed to carry out running tests on bevel and hypoid gear units. Like the FZG spur gear stress test rig, this works on the principle of the mechanical power circuit. The bevel or hypoid gear to be tested is tensioned via a second, larger hypoid gear and a spur gear stage. The test rig is used to investigate the tooth root and flank load capacity and for hypoid oil tests. Test procedures for determining scuffing and wear behavior were developed based on the FZG scuffing test for cylindrical gears. Six bevel-gear test rigs are operated at the FZG.
