Laboratory Course Composite Materials

TypePractical course
Duration4 SWS
TermWintersemester 2023/24
Language of instructionGerman

After participating in the course, students are able to differentiate between the variety of different matrix systems and fiber types and to select them according to the specific application. In addition, the students are able to design, calculate, manufacture and finally validate fiber composite components with regard to the initial requirements.

In this practical course, students gain both theoretical knowledge of fiber-matrix systems and practical experience with regard to the design of a composite structure. The entire process chain in the design and development of a fiber-reinforced component is covered: A composite structure is -- according to customer requirements -- designed, engineered, manufactured and then validated on the test rig. Specific topics include - Basics of fiber composite manufacturing - Material properties and usability of fiber composites - Potential of hybrid construction methods and natural fibers - Basics of mold construction from metal, wood, foam and plastics - Design of a prototype according to requirements - Production of a prototype using an autoclave in the prepreg process - Setting up a measurement chain to verify the mechanical properties of the prototype - Planning and execution of a validation test, as well as documentation and presentation of the results

Teaching and learning methods

The basic knowledge of materials, their manufacturing processes as well as the design of components made of fiber-reinforced composites in accordance with the requirements will be imparted at the beginning of the event with the help of lectures. The conceptual design of the components, the design and calculation with regard to mold design and manufacturability as well as the planning of the test arrangements and the types of loading are carried out in group work in order to enable mutual learning and to increase the exchange of experience and knowledge. The groups are supervised by experienced employees. Component fabrication is carried out under the supervision of staff at the machines to provide students with practical experience that will later help in the application-specific selection of fiber types and matrix systems as well as manufacturing processes. In a final component test and presentation of the results, students can document and communicate their findings, which promotes knowledge exchange and discussion skills.

The exam is a project work with a final presentation and a written test report.
