The practical course in lightweight design teaches test methods and measurement techniques for static and dynamic measurements as they are applied in the course of the development of a lightweight structure. The tests results obtained are evaluated and documented in a technical report. Procedure: Preliminary discussion: Overview of the 5 experimental dates and group assignment. 1st appointment: Static deformation measurement on a "satellite structure" using hand measurement and photogrammetry, and comparison with simple and complex models. 2nd appointment: Getting acquainted with the main effects of signal analysis, as well as performing an experimental modal analysis on a clamped beam. 3rd term: Independent performance and evaluation of an experimental modal analysis on a "satellite structure" and correlation with FEM results. 4th term: Determination of material data of aluminum and CFRP specimens on tensile testing machine and statistical evaluation of test results. 5th term: Generation of impact damage and subsequent detection using ultrasound and lock-in thermography. Debriefing: Group discussion of exam performance and grade announcement.

Teaching and learning methods

Perform various experiments and tests in the development of lightweight structures from material selection to modal analysis of the finished structure.


The assessment is based on two written papers in the form of a technical report, as well as the preparatory work for the individual dates, which are briefly examined in short colloquia.

Passing the "Lightweight Design" exam is strongly recommended.
