This year, the EFB Project Award for outstanding scientific and technical research projects went to the Chair of Metal Forming and Casting. Dipl.-Ing. Isabella Pätzold was honored for her research on "Reduction of edge crack sensitivity by two-stage shear cutting".

In the new issue of the magazine "Automobilproduktion" a detailed interview with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfram Volk on the subject of aluminium die-casting for large shell components has been published. Wolfram Volk sees gigacasting as an alternative that adds an interesting variant to the technological toolbox in car body construction.

I am pleased to present our 5th edition of the utg newsletter at the end of the year. Once again, it is packed with news and interesting research highlights.

The 15th Blechexpo - International Trade Fair for Sheet Metal Working - successfully passed the stage from 26 to 29.10.2021. With the best atmosphere and a top-class supporting program, the industry celebrated the personal exchange of cutting-edge technologies for detail and system solutions in sheet metal, profile and tube parts manufacturing after a long break.

During the project, which lasted several years, we were able to significantly reduce the sensitivity to edge cracking by adapting the re-cutting parameters for different boundary conditions such as cutting line curvature, sheet thickness or material. Research on shear cutting has a long and successful tradition at utg. The present report adds a new aspect to the field of competence of the chair.

Together with project partners from industry, the Chair of Forming Technology and Foundry Engineering (utg) is developing strategies for the production and application of tooling active elements made of high-performance concrete for sheet metal forming.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, after South Korea 2020, colleagues in Stuttgart also had to move the renowned thermoforming research conference online.

We look positively into the future and hope very much that personal meetings will soon be possible again. Until then, we will be happy to keep you up to date via the newsletters, our website and also in personal (telephone) conversations.

„Characterization Methods for Metal Cast Processes“ - The Special Issue addresses advanced topics concerning the quality of cast parts, the efficiency of cast processes, and the characterization of cast materials. All characterization methods concerning castings and cast processes are welcome, as well as the analysis of different kinds of metals, for example, high entropy alloys.

utg is currently investigating a forming process that enables the targeted improvement of aluminum sheets' mechanical properties. The use of so-called Equal-Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) enables effective, lightweight construction. This aspect gives it the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainability in production. A vital process factor here is the influence of friction, which…
