"Crossing the line: Impact of pedestrian group behavior on individual crossing decisions in AV interactions"
Our study investigates how pedestrian group behavior influences individual crossing decisions and the perception of automated vehicle (AV) communication. Using a Virtual Reality (VR) experiment, we analyzed interactions between pedestrians and AVs, revealing how social dynamics impact safety, efficiency, and trust in AV communication systems.
🔍 Key findings:
✅ Pedestrian group behavior significantly affects individual crossing decisions.
✅ Compliant behavior of additional pedestrians enhances efficiency, while non-compliant behavior can compromise safety.
✅ Trust in AV communication increases with repeated exposure.
✅ The study underscores the importance of designing eHMIs that consider group interactions, making AV communication more effective in urban settings.
This research contributes to improving AV communication strategies, ensuring safer and more intuitive interactions between pedestrians and AVs in real-world environments.
