Knee Injuries in Alpine Skiing - Why and How Mechatronic Ski Bindings Can Help

Abstract:

Knee injuries in alpine skiing are the most common of all injuries. By means of a surrogate study and a multi-body simulation the influencing parameters for loading the anterior cruciate ligament are quantified. Based on this analysis, the concept of a mechatronic ski binding is derived. A set of sensors allows the binding to react to these parameters. For a proof of concept, these sensor systems and an algorithm are developed, validated, and discussed.
